*Guinea-Bissau Military Reopens Borders After Coup
The military authorities in Guinea-Bissau have announced the reopening of the country’s borders, a day after seizing power and disrupting the electoral process.
General Lansana Mansali, inspector general of the armed forces, confirmed that all borders are now open, reversing the previous day’s closure of land, air, and sea entry points. The move comes after the military took control of the capital, Bissau, and detained several senior officials, including the president and prime minister.
The coup occurred just a day before the planned announcement of results from the presidential election, which was contested by President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and opposition candidate Fernando Dias.
The international community has condemned the coup, with the African Union and West African regional bloc ECOWAS calling for the restoration of constitutional order. The situation has raised concerns about the future of democracy in Guinea-Bissau, a nation with a history of instability and coups.
